5 Ways to Eat a Sandwich

3

Whilst watching sandwich expert, Jeff Mauro in his new series Sandwich King on TV this week, we realised the people of the world need to know the importance of identifying great sandwiches – and also to be shrewd about the way in which they scoff them. As you may have noticed, we take our sandwiches seriously.

Here are the 5 things you need to know about getting stuck in to Jeff Mauro’s delicious sandwiches.

1. Beer Battered Codwich Sliders

The bread: Parker House rolls or white baps, toasted.

Eat this if you’re: One of those people who secretly loves fish finger sandwiches. And beer.

How to eat: Slowly and steadily. Pick up carefully, giving equal finger and thumb support all the way around. Ensure the crispy battered cod, refreshing caper lemon tartar sauce and fennel slaw don’t fall out. Maybe sneak some extra cod on the side of your plate for good measure.

2. Chicago Steakhouse Sandwich

The bread: Crispy French bread, grilled.

Eat this if you’re: A fan of steak and in the mood for something quintessentially American.

How to eat: Open wide and swoop in quickly – this meaty, blue cheese dressing-smothered sandwich is best eaten hot. Check your face in anything reflective and keep a napkin handy because steak dribbles aren't a good look. Although, if you’re worried about getting garlic breath or spinach in your teeth, forget it.

3. Chicken Mole Torta

The bread: Bolillo or any crusty oval roll, warmed.

Eat this if you’re: Looking to sneak a bit more chocolate into your life.

How to eat: Feeling brave? Grab this saucy beast with a large pair of hands. Chomp hard to get through the crusty bread but bear in mind you may need to nibble any filling that tries to escape. However, if you’re sandwich-shy and more polite than us, cut it in half first. Either way, we hope more chicken mole, refried beans and tomatillo salsa end up in your belly than on your lap… or slathered across your face.

4. Greek Taco

The bread: Non-pocket pittas, lightly griddled.

Eat this if you’re: One who favours wraps over baps, spicy minced lamb, cucumber salsa and anything smothered in cooling feta tzatziki.

How to eat: Enjoy whilst hunched over your plate, nibbling on the nuggets of lamb that get away. Try to catch those pesky tzatziki drips with a napkin – we know how painstaking it is but persevere and try not to throw the unruly pitta at an unsuspecting passer-by or one of your mates. If you want to be all fancy like the street food pros, wrap half in greaseproof paper for a mess-free grip.

5. Jamon Jibarito

The bread: Bread? This recipe uses discs of fried plantain, baby.

Eat this if you’re: Gluten intolerant or (for some reason) have had a fall out with bread.

How to eat: With nimble fingers, pick up gently but bite aggressively to make sure you get a mouthful of twice-fried crispy plantain, ham, tomato, lettuce, cheese and spicy garlic mayo. You can also give yourself a pat on the back for trying something new, but wash your hands first.
