Some of the best food in London isn't found in expensive restaurants. It's served on plastic plates, in paper napkins or between slices of crusty bread - on the street. So if you're in the capital this summer, make sure you sample at least one of these incredible dishes.
When and Where: Brockley Market (SE4), Sat 10am–3pm and eat.st at King's Boulevard (N1).
Serves: Spiced burgers (sounds wrong, tastes right) served in soft and slightly sweet flatbreads. These are then drizzled with yoghurt and spice and sour chutney so that each bite is like a beautiful bittersweet symphony.
Order This: The Lamb Jalfrezi burger is absolutely delicious - the burgers are cooked with respect for the meat, so they are soft and juicy, and balanced with spice and zing and crunch from red cabbage. Yes please.
Anna Mae’s Smokehouse
Where and When: eat.st on King’s Boulevard (N1), Thurs 12pm–2pm. They also serve at events all over London, see their website for details.
Serves: Rootin’ tootin’ stick-to-your-ribs food from the Deep South. The owners Anna and Tony took a trip to the US of A and came back with a passion for Southern classics.
Order This: You could go simple and have ‘The Notorious P.I.G’ – a pulled pork sandwich with everything. But why miss out? Choose the 'Piggy Smalls' - creamy Mac 'n' Cheese, topped with pulled pork, Anna Mae's home-made BBQ sauce and pickled red onions. Cowabunga! Or rather, pigabunga!
When and Where: They serve at eat.st on King’s Boulevard (N1) as well as events all over London.
Serves: The balls here are the main event - perfectly seasoned meatballs, served with a piquant tomato sauce and pasta (penne not spaghetti, all the better for scooping up sauce) or salad.
Order This: The pasta and meatballs is a serious meal, light but filling. But you can also order by-the-ball, which is surely an opportunity not to be missed. Order as many as you can, you'll want more.
When and Where: Part of the eat.st collective, and so turn up on King’s Boulevard (N1) and at other pop up street food events.
Serves: They describe themselves as ‘Seriously Good Mexican Street Food’, and it is a description I wouldn’t dare to argue with. They serve Mexican main meals, tacos filled with a variety of delicious concoctions or veggie quesadillas with beans and salsa.
Order This: Try the cochinita pibil – pork marinated in orange juice and achiote paste (a Mexican spice mix) and cooked down for four or five hours until soft and totally delicious.

Serves: Unashamedly Asian fusion – noodle soups and grilled kebabs with a spicy, zesty Asian element.
Order This: We had the ‘jumbo full-meal package’ (obviously) which is 3 skewers and a noodle soup. The steak and pork skewers were great, but the crab bisque was more coconutty than anything under-the-sea. The prawns, however, were as hardcore as promised, and totally delicious.

Mama’s Jerk Station
When and Where: These guys defy geographic segregation, turning up North, East and West throughout the week. West Yard at Camden Lock Market (NW1), 7 days a week, 10am-6pm, The Vibe Bar, Brick Lane (E1), Mon–Fri 6pm–11.30pm, Sat 10am–1am and Sun 10am-11.30pm and Portobello Road Market, every Sat, 10am–5pm.
Serves: Everything, jerked. Jerk chicken wraps or fresh jerk chicken salad boxes, jerk sausages or jerk veggie bean cakes, everything is marinated or mixed with ‘Mama’s secret jerk marinade’.
Order This: The jerked meat and veg cakes are absolutely delicious, and the hot sauce and tropical mayo are outrageous. But they miss a trick with the quality of their flatbreads – a bit too chewy – so go for the salad boxes for an unadulterated spicy bite.

Serves: Moules, glorious moules. Fresh seafood is shipped down from Scotland and cooked in front of your eyes. A taste of the seaside in urban King's Cross.
Order This: The moules frites are incredible and surprising. Mussels cooked in front of you in white wine and shallots, served on freshly-cooked French fries. The chips soak up all the winey seafood flavour and reach a perfect balance of crispy and soggy.
